Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’
Common names for this plant include European Filbert, European Hazel, Harry Lauder's Walking Stick, Hazelnut, Corkscrew Hazel, and more. This slow growing plant can grow to be 10-15' tall and wide.
But who is Harry Lauder, and why is there a plant named after his walking stick?
Well, Sir Harry Lauder (1870-1950) was a Scottish entertainer in the early 20th century. He was internationally famous as a musician and a comedian. The walking stick he carried with him was twisted and contorted similar to the shape of this plant. When this plant needed a name, Harry Lauder's walking stick was the first thing that came to mind.
